Al-Walaja
This survey was prepared as part of a new Master Plan for the village of Al-Walaja, initiated by its residents to legally formalize land uses that have existed for 80 years. Approximately 3,000 residents live in Walaja, a Palestinian village located in southeastern Jerusalem; part of the village falls within the city's municipal jurisdiction and part lies outside.
In 1948, the original ancient village was emptied of its residents and its houses were destroyed. The residents crossed the Refa'im Stream from its north bank to the south and re-established the village on lands that had previously served as its agricultural hinterland.
The survey analyzed maps, aerial photographs, historical documents, both textual and visual, and included interviews with local residents. The goal was to describe the complex narrative of the new village’s development and enable its interpretation within the broader context of the original village and its agricultural and scenic system.
